Interview Segment:

Usually we have sound effects…Here’s Tobie!

Tobie tells a little bit about herself (see bio)

A little about myself…. I fell in love with traveling when I was a teenager. When I was 17 I had the opportunity to backpack through Europe and drive from Utah to Canada with my two best friends. I think that was the where my love for exploring began. My husband, daughters and I have driven to Canada and across the country and lived in Cuernavaca and Guanajuato Mexico. In 2002 our family backpacked through central Mexico for several months and in 2015 we drove from Utah through Mexico to Guatemala where we lived and taught English. This is my sixth year running El Mundo and we have learned so much by traveling. I love to travel and explore the world with my girls. I love to help people and bring joy into their lives. I love to educate others about other cultures. I look forward to sharing these amazing learning experiences with you and your children!

Tobie says the people in Guatemala are amazing, but they have poverty and hunger.  Tobie wants to create a free lunch program for the school children.  The poverty is what stands out.  The fun things about Guatemala make it a great place to visit.  Volcanoes, beaches.  The size of Louisiana.  20+ different languages spoken there.  Melting pot.

Linda tells about her trip to Germany, and the food potential.

Tobie calls her kids snitzel.  A pork chop in Germany!

Linda asks:

What does Biz4Good mean to you?

It is what is motivating.  Business and Life.  I have done good most of my life.  Was raised on welfare with a single mom and lots of kids.  We always gave.  On TG they would take food to the shelters, and always found families who had it worse than them.  12 days of Christmas they observed and created gifts for others.  She remembers in 7th grade starting a collection for the homeless shelter.  Donating extra coats.  The news came a did a story about her wanting to help the homeless.  She thinks it is just the way the world should be.  #begooddogood

If you do it for the right reasons, its better for everyone.  Linda adds what goes around…

We go to Guatemala and do good work in the orphanages.  Our hearts are changed forever.  And, it is a win win situation for everyone.

Share how others can get involed in El Mundo (this means the World)

Tobie is moving to a new business model.  A non-profit:

Guatamalan Humanitarian Tours is the new name!

We do 11 day trips to Guatemala City and we play, and do good work.  At orphanages and schools.  Teaching English.  The director of the school is pleased to have visitors come and teach.  They want the children to be bi-lingual.  Her goal is for participants to meet people and make friend. We all want the same things for ourselves and our children.  Bridging the Gap.

The closer you get to people, the more you are not going to build those walls.  – Linda

Understanding other people and their situations.

Tobie has gotten these people to continue to have these connections with people all over the world.

Ryan mentions sponsoring people from Taiwan when he was young.

You have such great experiences with people from all over.

Ryan thinks he may be part Italian….

Once of Tobies favorite places in the world.

Guatemala is about a 5 hour trip.  Very easy travel.  Only an hour off on time zone.  Not hard for our bodies to readjust.

Linda & Ryan want to go!  Check out the food.

Forests, beaches, volcanoes….so much in Guatemala.  It touches the bottom of Mexico.  The country is very diverse.  Roasted marshmallows on the volcanoes.  Within 3 hours they were at the beach. We do a mix of fun and volunteerism.

Common to burn.  So, everything is cooked over wood.  Cooking inside homes cause respiratory issues.  They help put stoves in to help these families.

Highlands, many don’t have access to vehicles, so we go to them.  People travel for a whole day to come down to see them.  Women with new babies, etc.  They help with their gardens.

Go to the forest and see monkeys.  It is a well-rounded trip.

On our last day, there is a sunrise tour.  Bringing intention into the process….

Tobie has been doing this for 5 years as a hobby.  She took kids.  So, like a single mom she does the traveling with her girls.

It is easy to get self-absorbed.  When you go and work with a family in a small space as their home. Tobie describes their lifestyle and homes in detail.  We have a very easy life in comparison.

It shows the strength of those people.  Tobie shares a memory.  They have a private bus and driver.  They see people salvaging wood.  70-year old men with their whole backs carrying wood.  She tells about hiking there.  Being at the top with a bunch of kids.  Were not having that much fun.  A woman comes along 70 or 80 years old, with 50+ pounds of wood on her back.  The kids had a reset.  They had nothing to complain about.

Tobie says there will be trips in July & August, and space is available.

Also doing donations.  Collecting backpacks, school supplies, baby kits.

Average income is $70 per month there.  An educated teacher would make $200.

School supplies are usually something they just could not afford.

You can go and personally deliver a gift.  Lots of things they need.

Thanks Again, Tobie!  For all you are doing….

Get a passport.  $120 – good for 10 years.
